In the 2010 earthquake, the city of Legoane was all but demolished. Considered the hardest-hit city in all of Haiti, nearly all of the concrete buildings in Leogane were destroyed, and thousands perished. In the continuing effort to rebuild this devastated area, Tesoros Trading founder Jonathan Williams, in collaboration with the HAND/EYE Fund artisan grants committee, created the Million Hearts for Haiti Campaign. These simple hand-carved stone hearts from Leogane are an instrumental part of the Million Hearts for Haiti Campaign and a powerful representation of the enduring spirit and potential of the Haitian people. Thanks to the HAND/EYE fund, the hearts provide an income for the craftsmen that make them; they also support a grant program for the skilled artisans who are preserving ancient craft traditions and innovating new methods of production. |
| Additionally, Tesoros Trading donates the proceeds from Haitian heart sales to the HAND/EYE Fund. To date, they have donated total well over $80,000. Endlessly inspired by the vibrancy and potential of the Haitian artisan community, Urban Zen has joined the Million Hearts for Haiti Campaign to amplify and accelerate their mission. The goal of “Million Hearts for Haiti” is to sell one million of these beautiful stone hearts to raise one million dollars for the HAND/EYE Fund Artisans Grants for Haiti program. We invite you to visit the Urban Zen store and purchase a stone heart or another piece of Leogane stonework for yourself. It is a wonderful way to give your own heart to a community that strives to create new beauty, in addition to rebuilding what they once had. |
