Even before the earthquake, Haiti was victim to rampant and widespread unemployment, with an average of two thirds of the population lacking consistent work. Caribbean Craft, founded in 1990 by young Dutch and Belgian entrepreneurs, saw this not as a problem, but an opportunity.

Tapping into the dynamic Haitian population, they found craftsmen that had inspiration and talent, and paired these gifts with training and infrastructure to create beautiful artisan products as well as income for over 500 Haitian families.

Caribbean Craft participates in artisan training, design assistance and the exploration of new export market outlets. They work to both coordinate producers and export their products wholesale to an international clientele, guaranteeing as much money as possible returns to the men and women that create these beautiful items.

Urban Zen and Caribbean Craft have collaborated to design exquisite paper-maché bags that capture the grace and resourceful beauty of Haitian creativity. We encourage you to visit Urban Zen and see these bags for yourself. Perhaps your heart will be captured—as ours has—by the vibrant, resilient artisan communities of Haiti, and by Caribbean Craft as they work to help Haitian artisans to gain a sense of dignity and empowerment by becoming wage earners.
