Jean-Paul and Yvette Sylvaince lost their home and all their belongings to the Earthquake, but in spite of this, they continued to innovate and create some of the most amazing and beautiful crafts in the world. When Urban Zen founder Donna Karan deemed their work as representative of a new golden standard for the global luxury market, it was the ultimate example of the way that the vibrance and strength of the Haitian people has allowed them to continue on despite the devastation wrought by disaster.

The Urban Zen Foundation has since built them a workspace in Jacmel so that they may continue their thriving business, which incorporates leaves of tobacco fused into paper maché creating a line of products exuding a natural elegance and intricacy of form which cannot be found anywhere else on the globe.
 
These exceptional wares illustrate the idea that, despite the devastation wrought by disaster, creative genius and impassioned dedication can benefit not just the creator, but the world as a whole.
